iLogix Computer Solutions were asked to look at an iPad that would not charge.

There are many tangibles to look at in this scenario. As we have previously said in our blogs it is always best to start with the point of least resistance and in this case that would be to use a known working lightening cable.

When we power devices in the workshop we use an amp meter, this tells us how much power the device is drawing and how it is drawing it. It may be impossible to tell if something is briefly trying to power on, but when we look at the amp draw we can spot it instantly. In this case what we found was that the device would charge depending on how the lightening cable was positioned, so in other words wiggle the cable and it comes to life. This is a tell tale sign of a damaged charge port.

With the Apple iPad 9th Gen this is not an easy fix. The charging flex cable is soldered to the Logic Board and one mistake will lead to ripped pads, additionally the device is full of plastic parts which makes applying hot air something best left to a repair specialist.

See our blog right --- >>> here <<<--- for more on ripped pads.

After we have dismantled the iPad we start by applying leaded solder to the pads. We then apply hot air moving the soldering iron all the time to reduce the chance of melting plastic and as you see the solder turn to liquid gently edge the port upwards. A microscope is essential to this, and many other, repairs.

We then align a new port and using a soldering iron carefully solder it into place. The picture below shows the port aligned and touched into place with a soldering iron. We will need to go over the pads one by one making sure of a solid connection.

We can now see s steady amp draw regardless of how the cable is positioned.

It's a fix!
