The photo at the top of this page shows the pads of a Nintendo Switch USB-C Port. Someone has removed the port and lifted the pads. This happens when pressure is put on the port before the solder has sufficiently melted to allow the pins on the port to detach from the pads. The result is that the pads are pulled off the circuit board and stick to the port. This makes what could have been a quick repair into to something that takes a lot more time with less chance of success.

The pins on the USB-C port connect to pads which connect to traces which connect to components. If the pad is gone the path needs to be recreated like the following diagram demonstrates.

We can run new pads with copper jumper wire, it takes a steady hand and a good soldering iron. We used a Hakko FX-951 with a micro soldering tip.

By the time we had completed the repair the board looked like this.

The green liquid is called solder mask, this allows us to cross conductive materials with out any shorts or interference with any circuit. Solder mask is applied as a liquid and cured with UV light.

The next thing is to solder a new port in place and then test it.
