At iLogix Computer Solutions we see a lot of broken laptops. When a laptop will not power on there are a lot of things that can cause it and as we have said in previous blogs always start with the point of least resistance. In this case start at the plug and work back in, the power supply is 19v and when we tested it with a Multimeter that's what we got. So we know the Power supply and the fuse are ok as is the power socket. On the HP ProBook 450 G4 the power button makes a click sound when pressed, you can also feel it. This happens because under the power button you will find a tactile switch. We have blogged on Tactile Switches before -----> Here <----- , this is what gives the power button a popper action and when we pressed the power button in this case it was not responding the way we expected.
What usually happens is that after repeated use the tactile switch can start to disintegrate, this makes it harder for the user to power the laptop on and as a result they start pressing the power button even harder and this acts as a catalyst towards the switches final destruction.
Do not panic, iLogix Computer Solutions keep lots of different tactile switches in stock.
When we dismantled the laptop we was able to prove our suspicions right. Under the power button there is a power button board, on the board there is a tactile switch that was broken.
In the following photo we see the difference between what it did look like and what a working switch looks like.
Now we need to replace the switch. This involves removing the old switch with a hot air station, tinning the pads with fresh solder and then soldering the new switch in place.
This is what it is meant to look like!
It's another fix !!
Diagnosing this fault, dismantling the laptop, repairing the power button board and putting it back together took less than an hour and cost the customer a lot less than a new laptop,
iLogix Computer Solutions can do the same for you.
