How to check the health of your Surface Pro battery

Check out our blog and check out your Surface Pro battery health.

Battery health

The mission of iLogix Computer Solutions is for customer satisfaction. We acheive this using more than technical skill. When you connect to our website the first statement we make is that by being a customer of iLogix Computer Solutions we give you first rate customer care. We see your business as a bigger picture, being sure that we are doing the right thing in the right way is crucial. This is also reflected in our service terms where we state that if we do not think that a business transaction is in the best interest of the customer we will not carry out the work. This is what is called irony because to give a good level of customer care you sometimes have to say no. We do however always offer a report with any repair even if the end result is to leave the device untouched.

iLogix Computer Solutions were recently contacted by a customer who asked us to change the battery in her Microsoft Surface Pro. iLogix Computer Solutions provide battery changes on all devices, see our blog here. The days of opening a compartment and releasing the battery are a thing of computing history. This Microsoft Surface Pro is no different. We need to remove the screen and elevate the Logicboard which requires special tools, experience and training, however, before we carry out any work we need to take a look. Start by understanding what we are doing, why we are doing it and what we are looking to acheive. In other words, is changing the battery going to help?

We can run a command in Microsoft Windows to generate a battery report, we can go to a command prompt or DOS prompt for the old timers (like me) - start / type cmd and hit enter - and run the following:

powercfg /batteryreport

powercfg command

This will generate a battery report in the location stated in the output. You can see a summary of design and full charge capacity and cycle count.

In this case the output of the report showed the battery had 312 cycles, meaning that it has recharged 312 times and that it is at 83% of the manufacturer capacity.

Not a bad battery

The ethos of iLogix Comoputer Solutions is "saving the planet one repair at a time", amazing, but there is a limit. This is a Surface Pro 4 with 4Gb of memory, modern computers are not an easy upgrade without the help an upgrade partner like iLogix Computer Solutions, see our blog here for more details on this. The device is an older computer, the user is struggling with limitations around this and putting a new battery in it is not going to help much. If the battery report looked like the following, that's a different matter.

This is a bad battery

We explained our findings to the customer and we asked her what she wanted to do, we advised against the battery change. We all agreed not to proceed and the final cost to her was nothing due to the iLogix Computer Solutions no-fix-no-fee policy.

We want your tech to work for you, it’s that simple.

If you need a battery change, then contact us, infact if it is completely broken contact us. We want it to work again as much as you do because that is what we do.
