iLogix Computer Solutions were recently asked if we were able to resolve a suspected electronics fault on a DeWALT DCC018, of course we can.
Always check your warranty, in our service terms we state this very clearly because if you are entitled to a repair from the manufacturer you are unlikely to get it if you take it apart.
The DeWALT DCC018 Tyre Inflater has two power options. You can use a DeWALT rechargeable battery which is interchangeable with other DeWALT power tools or by simply plugging it into your cars cigarette lighter socket. There is, however, a common issue where the DeWALT DCC018 will stop working off the battery but will continue to work off the 12v. This article describes a solution to this common fault.
The DeWALT DCC018 is a Tyre Inflator, you connect it to your Tyre valve, set the desired Tyre pressure and off it goes. Once inflated to the set pressure it will stop inflating. It also has an LED so you can easily inflate your Tyre by the roadside in the dark. These units cost around £170.00 in the UK. I bought a similar product from Costco however it is nowhere near as good and if I turn my back on it my Tyres will explode because it will keep inflating until it is switched off.
To resolve the issue where the DeWALT DCC018 is not working on the battery we need a bench power supply, a multimeter and a soldering iron. Additionally you need a philips screwdriver, some leaded solder, soldering wick and soldering flux.
Start by removing the screws and keeping them safe and departmentalised, so you can remember what screw went with what component. In electronics we often see issues caused by long screw damage which is where a screw has been forced into the wrong place and in some cases can permanently damage the device.
To dismantle the DeWALT DCC018 you need to desolder some wires. The system board is at the bottom and we need to remove the motor, make a note of what you a desoldering and where it was connected so you can put the device back together without any issue.
Once we have got to the system board there are two things we need to look at.
There are two fuses on the board, labelled Z. Put your multimeter into continuity mode. Place the probes at either end of the fuse and if the multimeter has continuity it will make a beep.
If it does not then replace the fuse. Add leaded solder to where the fuse is soldered to the board to reduce the factory solder melting temperature and then work the fuse off the board without applying force.
However, if the fuse is ok move onto the relays.
There are two relays on the system board. The one labelled SRG-S-118DM is the power relay for the battery.
You can test relays with a bench power supply by running 9v through the pins, you can usually hear the relays open and close if they are working, however if you are not sure what pin to apply this to there is a risk of further damage.
To remove the relay I do not recommend using a hot air station as there are too many fragile items in close proximity that can be damaged easy. If you do use hot air cover plastic with Kapton tape and deflect with foil, lower the airspeed and point away from plastic components or simple apply some leaded solder to where the pins are soldered onto the board, mix with the factory unleaded solder to lower the melting point then heat each pin with the soldering iron gently applying low level pressure to move the company gently away from the system board. Once the components are out using some soldering wick to remove surface solder, this will allow you to get a good join when you solder the new component on. Soldering flux is a liquid that aids the chemical reaction in the solder and helps you to control the solder flow.
