In this article we refer to Gb and Tb. To help us understand this; in the world of computers Megabytes (Mb), Gigabytes (Gb) and Terabytes (Tb) are measurements. These measurements are bytes and multiples of bytes. The more bytes we have the better our systems perform. 1 Terabyte (Tb) equals 1,000 Gigabytes (Gb) or 1,000,000 Megabytes (Mb).

When considering a memory upgrade it is important for iLogix Computer Solutions to understand the existing memory configuration of your laptop. There are considerations to be made. This Blog discusses these and examples of how you can gather infomation about your Windows Latop.

Operating System

Microsoft Windows is now a 64Bit operating system. Older versions of Windows were shipped in either 32Bit or 64Bit. 64Bit versions of Microsoft Windows offer improved performance over 32Bit and one of the reasons is that 32Bit versions of Windows can only address 4Gb of memory (RAM) max so even if you have more that 4Gb of memory in your laptop Windows 32Bit will only ever see 4Gb. Depending on the version of the operating system such as Home, Pro or Enterprise, 64Bit versions of Windows can address up to 6Tb.

Using the wmic command we can run a simple query that will answer this for us.

wmic OS get OSArchitecture

Click the start button and type CMD, double click Command Prompt:

Opening a command prompt.

Type our command and the output will look something like this:

wmic OS get OSArchitecture

wmic OS get OSArchitecture

Physical Hardware

Most laptops have 2 memory slots. We need to understand how these are populated. There are a number of ways we can do this. We can use the wmic command again.

One way we can do this is to drop into a command prompt and run:

wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity,MemoryDevices

You will see something like the following, note that my PC supports 16 Memory Modules, your laptop will not support this much, however this is a demonstration.

wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity,MemoryDevices

Online memory Scanner

Crucial is a manufacturere of laptop memory and storage and on their website they offer a memory scanner tool that will analyse your device and report your options to you including hardware prices.

The memory scanner will tell you what RAM and Storage you can upgrade to, how much you have and what slots are populated.

Of course iLogix Computer Solutions can do this for you if you prefer.
